Our Columbus team presents check to AFSP Nebraska Chapter.
COLUMBUS, NE – Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest (CECM), through its Commonwealth Cares initiative, has generously donated $25,000 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) in the names of an employee lost from suicide. This contribution reflects Commonwealth’s dedication to supporting mental health awareness and creates a path toward healing for those affected by suicide.
“We are incredibly thankful to Commonwealth Electric for honoring the life of their colleague through this meaningful donation,” said Ashley Howe, Nebraska Area Director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Turning loss into action is one of the most powerful ways to create hope, and their generosity allows the Nebraska Chapter of AFSP to expand education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide. This funding helps us reach more Nebraskans with prevention programs and reminds families that they are not alone.”
AFSP is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. Through research, education advocacy, and community programs, AFSP works to create a culture that prioritizes mental health and prevents suicide. With chapters in all 50 states, AFSP empowers individuals and communities to take action, raise awareness, and support those impacted by suicide loss. By funding innovative research and promoting prevention strategies, AFSP works toward a future where suicide is no longer a leading cause of death.
Giving back is at the heart of Commonwealth’s mission, and the Commonwealth Cares initiative brings that commitment to life under the banner “Energizing Communities for a Brighter Tomorrow.” This program expands local efforts into a structured framework for impactful, strategic giving. Commonwealth strives not only to provide exceptional electrical, low-voltage, and exposition services but also to make a lasting difference for its industry, customers, and communities. By inviting employees to nominate causes that matter to them, the initiative fosters a sense of ownership and connection. Through this inclusive approach, team members can volunteer their time, share their skills, and help shape the company’s philanthropic direction.
“Supporting the AFSP is deeply personal to me. My family was forever changed six years ago when we lost someone we loved to suicide. By contributing to AFSP, I’m honoring their memory and helping to spread awareness, offer hope, and ensure that others know they’re never alone. I’m proud to support an organization that is making such an important impact,” said Warehouse Coordinator Jody Prorok, who nominated the AFSP for this initiative.
This donation underscores the importance of addressing mental health in the workplace and beyond. By partnering with organizations like AFSP, we aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and encourage open conversations that lead to prevention and healing. Together, these efforts reflect a shared commitment to creating safer, more supportive communities where every individual feels valued and connected.
“This donation is also a heartfelt tribute to our colleague whose life touched so many in Greater Nebraska,” said Jake Gable, VP of Operations. “We honor their memory by supporting AFSP’s vital work, and hope this gift inspires others to speak openly about mental health and seek help when needed. Our team remains committed to fostering a caring workplace where everyone feels valued.”
