A patient care area within Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s maternity unit
Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest in Des Moines, IA, is proud to be part of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) Maternity Renovation project, a major modernization effort focused on enhancing patient care, improving safety, and supporting staff efficiency throughout the maternity unit.
The project includes extensive electrical and low-voltage upgrades that will help create a more functional, comfortable, and reliable environment for patients, families, and hospital staff. Commonwealth’s scope includes new lighting, power distribution, nurse call, telecommunications, access control, fire alarm modifications, security systems, and infant protection technology.
Because the work takes place in an active healthcare setting, careful planning and phasing are essential. The renovation is being completed in stages so hospital staff can continue caring for patients while construction progresses. Early work includes installing a new electrical panel, expanding distribution pathways, and relocating communications and security infrastructure. Future phases will continue improvements in patient rooms, nurse stations, support spaces, and corridors.
Low-voltage improvements are also a key part of the renovation. Upgrades to the nurse call system, infant protection system, wireless access points, surveillance equipment, access control, and data cabling will support the hospital’s day-to-day operations and long-term technology needs. The project also includes new energy-efficient LED lighting and advanced lighting controls designed to enhance patient comfort while reducing energy use.
Leading the work in the field is on-site Foreman Gerrit Houser, who is coordinating daily installation activities and helping ensure the project is completed safely and efficiently. Project Manager Mark Duffy is providing overall project oversight, working closely with the owner, design team, and trade partners to keep each phase moving forward.
We are proud to support this important renovation and contribute to a space that will serve patients, families, and healthcare professionals for years to come.
