The Omaha, NE location Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest (CECM) has completed the construction of the 200,000 square foot Baxter Hockey Arena for The University of Nebraska Omaha. The arena has been designed to be easily converted for other sporting events, concerts, graduations, and community gatherings. This facility houses two ice rinks. The main sheet of ice will be the new home for the UNO Maverick’s hockey team. The main sheet of ice will be roughly 85 ft. x 200 ft. and has seating for 7,500 spectators. While the second sheets of ice will be used for practices and the general public.
There are four levels (Event, Concourse, Suite and Press) in this building along with a large catwalk system. The Suite level includes 17 Luxury Viewing Suites each with private pantry kitchen. Part of the lighting package includes state-of-the-art Musco LED sport lighting which was installed at over 60’ above the main ice, off of the cat walk structure.
The construction of the Arena included over 4,000 light fixtures and more than 53 miles of electrical conduit for lighting and power branch circuiting. The entire facility also houses a state of the art lighting control system that can be controlled by hand held device. This system allows the facility department the flexibility to control all lighting and building management systems from anywhere in the world.
With the majority of the structure’s seating and stair egress being constructed using precast concrete, the electrical layout and installation was an intensive process. Many of the light fixtures, and other electrical devices are recessed into the precast structures. To aide in the construction of the precast panels CECM’s electricians traveled to Minnesota to the precast plant to ensure a smooth project when the panels arrived on site. Both 2D CAD and 3D Revit modeling were used for the precast rough-in planning, layout and installation.
